Q: can you tell in brief about yourself?
A: Firstly, I would like to extend my gratitude to the entire Bhutan Today family for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the Face to Face program. I am Kinley Zam from Punakha Dzongkhag. It has been 7 years since I started working as a makeup artist for movies. Actually, it is the first time in our country that people working behind the camera are given an opportunity to share their thoughts. So, once again, I want to thank Bhutan Today for being our medium to let people hear our thoughts.

Q: Why and how did you get into the field of doing makeup? What made you pursue this career?
A: Initially, my interest was in acting, and my career in the movie industry didnโ€™t start as a makeup artist. It was director Cheku Dorji who gave me a breakthrough in the movie โ€˜Gold Ringโ€™. There, I got a role as a supporting actor and also handled wardrobe. Later, he entrusted me with wardrobe duties again in the movie โ€˜Odong Maraโ€™. Then, a senior makeup artist, Kunzang, who is the wife of Director Cheku, advised me not to focus solely on acting. She explained that without good connections or acquaintances in the industry, itโ€™s hard to get work. She encouraged me to focus on makeup as we could find work for acting side by side. So, I began my career as a makeup artist through the movie โ€˜Nya Gi Sokโ€™.

Q: In your career as a makeup artist until today, what is something you have done differently?
A: People often perceive makeup as merely grooming actors, but itโ€™s much more than that. Special FX makeup involves creating elaborate transformations, such as burned or rotten faces. Iโ€™ve delved into such intricate work, crafting effects like hearts protruding from chests or realistic throat cuts. These tasks demand a blend of creativity, precision, and technical skill, pushing the boundaries of traditional makeup artistry.

Q: What are the challenges faced as a make-up artist and how is the support from your family you being in this field?
A: As a makeup artist, the scarcity of equipment often presents a daunting challenge. However, Iโ€™m immensely grateful for the unwavering support of my family. Their encouragement has been instrumental in my journey, providing the strength and confidence needed to overcome obstacles. With their continued support, I face each day with determination, knowing they believe in my passion and talent.

Q: How do you manage your time with work and family?
A: During shoots, Iโ€™m away for at least 45 days per project. To ensure quality time with my family, I schedule a month-long break after each project concludes. This allows us to reconnect and cherish moments together, balancing my professional commitments with personal priorities.

Q: So recently, what are you up to with, working in any projects?
A: Following the completion of โ€œJhaza Lham,โ€ I transitioned to the reality show โ€œBhutan Idol,โ€ which recently ended. Presently, Iโ€™m actively involved in two other reality shows: โ€œBhutan Firstโ€ and โ€œBhutan Star.โ€ Each project offers unique experiences and challenges, enriching my journey in the industry.

Q: What differences did you find in working in movie and working in a reality show?
A: When comparing movie and reality show work, the first notable difference lies in the setting: movies require outdoor work under the sky, whereas reality shows allow me to work indoors, often staying in a room. Additionally, movie shoots typically span a minimum of 45 days outdoors, while reality show commitments generally demand only two days per week. Furthermore, with assistance from Hung Production House, Iโ€™ve established an office designed and maintained to resemble that of an officer.

Q: What is your comment of pursuing a career fully focused on make up only, do you think we can make a living through it?
A: Personal finance management lies within each individualโ€™s grasp. As a makeup artist, my income isnโ€™t solely dependent on film or TV work; I also cater to foreign clients. This diverse clientele enhances my earnings, showcasing the breadth of my profession. Through prudent financial management, Iโ€™ve achieved financial stability and a fulfilling career.
