A. Naturally, Iโm immensely proud and delighted for the team. This achievement truly reflects the progress of the womenโs football team in our nation. It underscores the unwavering commitment and effort put forth by the players. Weโve been a cohesive unit for an extended period, progressing together from the girlsโ academy in Gelephu. Reaching this stage as a united group is a source of immense pride.
Q. What initially sparked your interest in playing football and led you to assume the role of team captain?
A. I come from a sports-loving family, with a strong background in football. Growing up, my family instilled a deep passion for sports, particularly from a young age. My father, in particular, has been incredibly supportive of my football journey. A love for sports is in my genes, you could say.
Iโve had the privilege of connecting with friends and mentors who further fueled my passion for football. In 2019, I made my initial appearance for the National team during the SAARC Womenโs Championship as a player. It was during the Cos International Championship that I distinctly recall being appointed as the team captain. This role brought significant responsibilities and a great sense of honor.
Q. In your view, what are the key attributes and duties a womenโs football team captain should possess and uphold?
A. As a team captain, itโs crucial to guide my teammates in understanding their roles and responsibilities within the team. Every member is a leader in their own right. The title of captain involves tasks like attending press conferences and making certain decisions on the field. But I see the captainโs role as dedicated to discovering the full potential of each player and fostering positive energy within the team.
Q. How do you motivate and inspire your teammates before and during a game?
A. Personally, my football journey has been incredibly enriching, and Iโve benefited from the experience and my teammates. I inspire them to rediscover the initial inspiration that drove them to play and sparked their interest in football. I encourage them to dedicate themselves to the sport and express gratitude for what football has offered them. My aim is to help them find hope and inspiration as a powerful motivator.
Q. Could you describe your teamโs training routine and preparation for important matches or tournaments?
A. Typically, we organize a training camp spanning 2 to 3 months before matches or tournaments. However, we face challenges, like many of our players being students, and training sessions in different locations. Coordinating everyone can be a logistical challenge. For this tournament, we had limited preparation time. Nevertheless, maintaining physical fitness through club training is crucial for our girls.
In our usual training camps, we include gym sessions, afternoon training, and friendly matches with youth and boysโ teams to prepare effectively.
Q. Whatโs your favorite aspect of being a womenโs football team captain, and what keeps you motivated season after season?
A. My favorite moment was when I wasnโt the team captain. It was during the previous yearโs SAARC Championship. Though I couldnโt play due to injury, we achieved our first victory, and witnessing a teammate lead the team to success was immensely proud. This experience motivated me to continue playing in national tournaments. The sense of pride and honor in representing our nation fuels my dedication.
Q. How do you handle adversity and setbacks within the team, and what strategies do you use to maintain team cohesion and morale?
A. Communication is often the key to solving problems. It involves honest discussions, collaboration, and sharing thoughts and experiences. As a captain, itโs my responsibility to address challenges within the team. I engage in candid conversations, establish trust, and work together to find solutions.
