Recognized for her potential by a prominent filmmaker, Phuntsho was soon cast in a pivotal role, igniting her path as an actress. Since then, she has captivated audiences with her exceptional skills and unwavering commitment to her craft, establishing herself as a rising star in the industry.
Q. What have you been up to lately, and how are you doing?
A. First of all, I would like to thank the host, Thukten Norbu, and Bhutan Today for providing me with the opportunity to be a guest on the program โFace to Face.โ To answer your question, I have been doing well. Recently, I served as an anchor for the show โSuper Talent Season 2,โ and currently, I am playing the role of the best friend of the main character in the movie โAum Penjor,โ directed by one of the most well-known directors, Karma Jerry.
Q. What was the first film you acted in, and how did you start your acting career?
A. My career didnโt begin with acting in a movie; it started with my participation in a reality show called โSuper Talent Season Oneโ as a contestant. It was there that Director Wangchuk Tallop saw potential in me and offered me the opportunity to act in a movie called โGaybi Dhungyel.
Q. What knowledge did you gain from participating in reality shows?
A. Thank you for asking this question. Participating in reality shows has provided me with invaluable knowledge. One significant aspect I gained was improved social skills. Prior to my involvement, I struggled with communication, but through the experience, I learned how to connect with others and be a supportive friend. The show featured three main categories: acting, singing, and dancing, and I participated in acting and dancing. I received constructive criticism from the judges and unwavering support from my family and numerous fans. In these shows, talent isnโt the sole determinant of success; audience votes also play a crucial role. I was fortunate to have strong support from admirers, which greatly contributed to my journey. Out of the top six contestants, I was honored to be named the fourth runner-up.
Q. Is there a difference between hosting a reality program and performing in a film?
A. As I continue to learn and grow, Iโve encountered challenges in transitioning to the role of an anchor. Unlike scripted acting in a movie, where dialogue is provided and easily memorized, anchoring requires thinking on your feet as the dialogues arenโt prepared in advance. Furthermore, expressing emotions convincingly can be challenging. In contrast to being a contestant on a reality show, where criticism is more forgiving, the scrutiny faced by actors in movies is often more intense. People tend to be more critical of performances in films, making it a more demanding environment compared to the relatively forgiving nature of hosting a show.
Q. Given the number of films in which you have appeared, which one is your personal favourite?
A. Each role Iโve portrayed has been fulfilling, yet if I were to select a favorite, it would undoubtedly be my portrayal of the best friend to the main character in the movie โAum Penjo.โ In this film, my characterโs close bond with a transgender woman, who faces harsh criticism due to societal prejudice against the trans community, resonated deeply with me. Despite the unjust judgments she endures, my character stands by her unwaveringly, refusing to judge her based on her physical appearance alone. Itโs this unconditional acceptance and support that makes this role my current favorite.
Q. Between the movies from the past and current movies, what difference do you notice?
A. Although I may not be able to pinpoint all the differences, my interest in an acting career has led me to observe significant changes, particularly in lighting techniques in films compared to the past. Moreover, Iโve noticed a remarkable evolution in the calibre of artists. Todayโs youth exhibit a higher level of professionalism and talent compared to previous generations.
Q. Did you always want to act, or did you start to become interested when you were given the opportunity to do so?
A. My passion for acting ignited during my childhood years, specifically when I was in fifth grade. Living in the remote village of Soeltep Sa, Samtse, opportunities to watch movies were scarce. However, one memorable occasion at school changed everything. The premiere of a movie titled โWangmo Wangmoโ introduced me to the captivating performances of the renowned actress, Tandin Bidha. From that moment on, I eagerly sought out every film featuring her. Inspired by her talent and charisma, I began emulating Tandin Bidhaโs acting style, encouraged by my youthful enthusiasm. I actively participated in dramas, fueled by my deepening interest in the craft of acting.
Q. From what I have heard, you have a unique story behind auditioning for the show. Can you share a brief story on it?
A. Acting has always been my passion, but I never anticipated the opportunity to pursue it, especially as a contestant on a reality show. One day, out of the blue, I received a call informing me of my selection for an audition. I was perplexed since I hadnโt submitted any video or message. Nevertheless, they assured me of my selection. Feeling skeptical, I decided to reach out to the showโs host for clarification. To my surprise, he confirmed my selection and explained that I had to submit a video. I felt fortunate to secure one of the few remaining audition spots. That marked the beginning of my career. Interestingly, the winners of the competition were awarded opportunities to study abroad, further highlighting the unexpected turns my journey has taken.
Q. Since the program is coming to an end, what advice would you like to pass on to the youth and the viewers?
A. Thatโs an excellent question. While I may not consider myself an expert, Iโve learned a lot along my journey, and thereโs some advice Iโd like to share with the youth. Firstly, trust in yourself. None of us are born as experts; itโs through trust, confidence, and hard work that we grow. When I first arrived in Thimphu, I faced challenges due to my limited education. I struggled to find employment, walking from interview to interview until my shoes were worn down.
Thankfully, I had the opportunity to undergo Dessung training, which proved invaluable for youth like myself. During the pandemic, I worked as a Dessup, fulfilling school duties, and later found employment in cafes. Despite initial struggles with facing crowds, with perseverance and the unwavering support of my family, especially my parents, I overcame my fears. Iโm immensely grateful for their support; without it, I would have felt lost. I also want to express my gratitude to the people of my village for their support during my appearance on โSuper Talent Season One.โ The outpouring of support from them and many others has been truly humbling, and I am deeply thankful for it.
