Ugyen Namdel, excelling in VFX, has made significant contributions to numerous films, showcasing his talent despite the absence of formal training. He self-educated through resources like YouTube, mastering software such as Adobe After Effects and Autodesk Maya. His dedication and creativity are evident in every project, as he collaborates seamlessly with teams to bring visions to life. Q: What is VFX in simple term?
A: Firstly, I want to extend my gratitude to Bhutan TODAY for inviting me to participate in the Face to Face program. VFX, in simple terms, refers to the process of creating or manipulating visual elements in a movie or video. During filming, there are often scenes where certain elements need to be added or modified to enhance the narrative or visual experience. Through the use of technology and specialized software, VFX artists create these elements and seamlessly integrate them into the scene, making them appear as though they were always there. This art of visual effects enables filmmakers to bring their creative visions to life and transport audiences to worlds beyond imagination.

Q: How did you earn interest in VFX and have you done any courses or training on it?
A: During my school days, my interest in VFX was piqued by watching movies. Despite doubts about my abilities, I opted for self-learning through platforms like YouTube instead of formal courses. The allure of creating visual wonders motivated me to explore the intricacies of VFX techniques independently. Through trial and error, coupled with online tutorials and resources, I honed my skills.

Q: As of today, in which Bhutanese movies have you worked, and are you working on any upcoming movies?
A: My career as a VFX artist started with the movie ‘Chogyel Norzang Dang Yethro Lhamo’, followed by ‘Eulha’. Recently, I have been working on the movie titled ‘Jhaza Lham’.

Q: what are the challenges faced by VFX industry in Bhutan?
A: In our country, VFX tasks are presently managed by individual professionals, contrasting with the collaborative approaches found in other nations where teams handle such work. Furthermore, our technological infrastructure remains relatively less advanced, lacking the sophisticated tools prevalent in more developed countries. Additionally, heavy equipment necessary for advanced VFX projects is often unavailable or limited in supply. This disparity places our VFX industry at a disadvantage, impacting the quality and scale of projects we can undertake.

Q: Are clients or directors satisfied with your work?
A: Before my debut as a VFX artist in movies, I worked on several small projects. During that time, Karma Tshering, the director of the movie ‘Chogyel Norzang Dang Yethro Lhamo,’ noticed my work and offered me a chance to contribute to the film. Fortunately, he was satisfied with my work, which led to further opportunities and projects in the industry.

Q: Do you see any future scope for VFX in Bhutan?
A: In the era of Bhutan’s digitalization, VFX emerges as a powerful avenue for artistic expression and storytelling. With mobile phone ownership pervasive, platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube serve as vital platforms for income generation. VFX offers Bhutanese creators a platform to showcase their talent and captivate audiences worldwide. As social media transforms content consumption habits, VFX stands at the forefront of innovation. Bhutanese artists leverage its potential to craft immersive narratives, fostering cultural exchange and global connectivity.

Q: Recently, Film association of Bhutan is conducting 23rd National Film Award, are you participating in it, if you are you expecting to win some award?
A: Of course, we have to participate as the movie we have worked in submit for the award ceremony, by default our name in various categories will be there. But winning an award really doesn’t bother me as I am satisfied with the work that I have satisfied my director and audience. And rather focus on improving myself to give better performances.

I may not be highly experienced in offering advice to others, but I’d like to share something based on my own experiences. If we easily give up, thinking that we can’t do it, we will never reach our goals. Instead, if we work with full dedication and genuine interest, nothing in the world will stop us from savoring the taste of success in our lives.
