Bongo Gewog in Chukha Dzongkhag is poised to launch a transformative Rainbow Trout Project on October 16, aiming to bolster local fish farming initiatives in response to the rising domestic demand for this high-value species. Known for its exceptional nutritional value and commercial appeal, Rainbow Trout is well-suited to the region’s cool, pristine waters, making it an ideal candidate for aquaculture in Bhutan.

The project has been allocated a budget of Nu 5 million (M) from the Haa Cold Water Fishery, designed to enhance local farmers’ production capabilities. Each participating farm will initially have a capacity of 18 metric tons (MT), with plans already in place to expand this capacity to 36 MT in the future. The initiative is not just about increasing fish production; it also aims to stimulate the local economy by creating numerous employment opportunities.

Local farmers in Bongo Gewog have expressed excitement and optimism regarding the potential benefits of the Rainbow Trout project. Several farmers have reported increased incomes, driven by the growing demand for Rainbow Trout. The sector’s development presents additional opportunities for future export, further enhancing the economic landscape for local fish farmers.

According to the Deputy Chief Livestock Production Officer of Chukha Dzongkhag, the initiative signifies a vital step toward diversifying the agricultural and livestock sectors in the Dzongkhag. “The project, which will officially commence on October 16, has been allocated a budget of Nu 5 million, primarily supported by the Haa Cold Water Fishery. Our initial focus is on establishing a robust foundation with 18 metric tons per farm. However, as we gather experience and optimize production, we aim to double this capacity,” he stated.

The initiative is expected to generate significant employment, especially for youth, thereby contributing to the local economy and providing families engaged in the industry with a new source of income. As Rainbow Trout farming gains traction in Bhutan, its potential for success is bolstered by the country’s favorable cold-water resources.

While the Rainbow Trout farming initiative offers considerable economic promise, it is crucial to implement strict guidelines to protect the natural water resources essential for this endeavor. Local communities have expressed enthusiasm, reflecting a positive outlook for sustainable aquaculture in Bhutan. The government’s support, combined with local initiative, aims to set a benchmark for fish farming across the country.

Kumar, the sole entrepreneur behind the Rainbow Trout Fish Farming project, embodies the spirit of innovation driving this initiative. Having completed specialized training at the Haa Cold Water Fish Project from April 18 to May 2, 2021, Kumar successfully transitioned from a novice to a modern entrepreneur. Initially, he faced numerous challenges, including a lack of financial resources and limited knowledge about optimal water temperatures for trout farming.

Understanding the delicate balance between water quality and fish health was a critical learning curve for Kumar. However, the formal training he received equipped him with valuable insights into the technical aspects of fish farming, as well as skills in identifying suitable locations for his project.

Kumar has implemented a modern cycle production process that enables efficient fish farming. Currently, he works alongside four dedicated team members, all committed to the success of the farm. Despite being in its early stages, Kumar’s project holds great promise. He is optimistic about expanding the farm in the near future, believing that it will not only enhance profitability but also create job opportunities for others in the community.

The primary focus of the farm is to ensure the successful hatching and nurturing of fish by maintaining a balanced ecosystem, which is crucial for their growth and nutrition. Looking ahead, Kumar envisions transforming his trout farm into an eco-tourism destination, offering visitors an opportunity to connect with nature while promoting sustainable fish farming practices.

The potential impact of the Rainbow Trout project extends beyond economic growth; it also promotes community engagement and environmental sustainability. Local farmers are already experiencing increased interest in aquaculture, with many eager to participate in the project. As the sector expands, it is poised to become a critical component of Bongo Gewog’s economy, providing a sustainable food source and enhancing local livelihoods.

Moreover, as the Rainbow Trout initiative progresses, the government aims to support further research and development in aquaculture. This will help ensure the long-term sustainability of fish farming practices while protecting Bhutan’s precious natural resources.
