Rinzin Norbu, a 23-year-old para-athlete, is redefining the limits of possibility as a national table tennis player and an advocate for inclusion and resilience in Bhutan. With pride, he identifies as both a sportsperson under the Bhutan Table Tennis Federation and a recent graduate of Royal Thimphu College, where he completed his Bachelorโs degree in Commerce in June 2024.
โMany people who have a disability like me rarely get to complete their higher education,โ said Rinzin Norbu, emphasizing the significance of his academic and athletic milestones.
However, his journey has been far from smooth. Rinzin Norbu candidly speaks about the challenges para-athletes face, particularly in adapting to the physical demands of table tennis. โWe cannot play like regular people,โ he remarked, describing the difficulties posed by mobility limitations. Essential movements, postures, and footwork required for competitive play are hurdles he continually works to overcome.
Despite these obstacles, Rinzin Norbu embraces an optimistic outlook. โThe challenges I face make me a better person and a skilled table tennis player. I am grateful for them,โ he said. Through determination and innovative adaptations, he has refined his technique, striving to match the standards of non-disabled athletes.
Rinzin Norbuโs optimism contrasts sharply with the lack of international exposure for Bhutanese para-athletes. Despite his national recognition, he has yet to represent Bhutan on the global stage. โWe do not lack potential, but we lack opportunities,โ he asserted.
Highlighting the talent within Bhutan, including players from organizations like Draktsho, Rinzin Norbu indicates the need for advanced training, exchange camps, and international competition. โThese opportunities would open doors for others who are interested in playing,โ he said, envisioning a ripple effect of inspiration and growth within Bhutanโs disability community.
Rinzin Norbuโs attributes his success to an unwavering positive mindset. โMy strategy is to always remain positive,โ he said, emphasizing the importance of mental fortitude. โI double my mental strength to compensate for my physical limitations.โ
For Rinzin Norbu, the dream of representing Bhutan internationally is more than personal ambition. He sees it as a pathway to inspire others, particularly those who feel confined by societal or personal challenges. โWhen players attach their minds to something that helps them grow, they can inspire those who feel trapped behind closed doors,โ he said.
Rinzin Norbu advocates for initiatives that would elevate para-athletes and unite communities. He believes these efforts would not only uplift persons with disabilities but also foster a sense of shared purpose among Bhutanโs youth. โSuch opportunities bring the community together to work towards one common goal,โ he added.
His message to others with disabilities is one of empowerment and perseverance. โI encourage people with disabilities to push themselves and become competent to face lifeโs challenges,โ he says.
