In a compelling narrative of resilience and determination, Paro resident Vikram Subba recounts his triumphant battle against alcohol addiction. His story serves as a beacon of hope for many struggling with similar challenges, shedding light on the arduous path to recovery and the strength found within. Join us as we delve into Vikram’s journey of overcoming adversity and finding renewed purpose.
Vikramโs journey began in his adolescence, marked by a tumultuous period following his departure from formal education. He didnโt qualify from class 10, which pressured him. In the journey of life, there are moments that test our resolve, challenging us to rise above our past mistakes and rebuild ourselves. For one individual, this journey has been a testament to resilience and the power of second chances. Reflecting on the past, there is a sense of sadness at the mistakes made and the need to start anew. However, this sadness is overshadowed by a profound sense of gratitude for the opportunity to begin again. With each reflection, he reaffirms his resolve to do better than before.
Struggling to find his footing, he found solace in the company of peers, embarking on a path that would lead him into the clutches of substance abuse. His descent into addiction commenced with experimenting with marijuana, a habit that quickly spiraled into consuming dependence over the course of 5-6 years. As the grip of addiction tightened, Vikram found himself tackling with the debilitating effects of alcohol abuse, including cravings, loss of control, and withdrawal symptoms.
Slowly, Vikram began to feel like he was wasting time, so he decided to apply for a job. He applied to Bhutan Power Corporation (BPC) and officially joined in July 2014, moving to Thimphu. Despite landing the job, he continued to use marijuana occasionally, considering it an energy booster and habit. However, realizing its dangers, he opted to replace it with alcohol. This decision led him into heavy drinking, causing him to lose control over his life. He admitted to neglecting his family, friends, and work responsibilities due to his alcohol addiction, which persisted for an extended period.
After arriving in Thimphu, Vikramโs alcohol consumption escalated, causing numerous problems with his family and leading to separation from his wife. Eventually, he resigned from his job and returned to Paro, where he opened a hotel. However, his addiction to alcohol intensified to the point where he nearly lost his life. Before seeking help at the Happiness Center, he faced multiple hospital admissions and endured judgment from those around him. Reflecting on his situation, Vikram grappled with thoughts about his future, including concerns about not being able to see his children and the disapproval of his family for his addiction. Despite several attempts to quit, he found himself repeatedly relapsing, often without realizing it.
Despite his desire to quit, he found himself unable to resist the allure of alcohol. Even though the fear of death loomed over him, he couldnโt summon the courage to stop drinking. โIllness would momentarily prompt thoughts of quitting, yet I remained unable to break free from addiction. This dependence cost me dearly, leading to the dissolution of my marriage and my resignation from work, forcing me to contemplate my future,โ said Vikram. Concerned friends and family suggested the Happiness Center, citing its positive outcomes. Willing to try anything, he enrolled in the program. The treatment was comprehensive, with mandatory sessions addressing addiction. โI committed to a three-month program in Phuentsholing where counselors, many of whom were former addicts themselves, shared their experiences and introduced various methods to overcome alcohol dependency,โ he expressed.
At the center, they teach us about the stark differences between the past and present in terms of cleanliness. They also provide guidance on distinguishing between good and bad behaviors. However, when he hangs out with his friends and witnesses them drinking, it triggers a sense of dรฉjร vu, reminding him of past mistakes. Despite this, he has learned to resist the temptation by substituting alcohol with coffee during social gatherings. He prioritizes engaging in meaningful conversations over drinking. He said, โEven when my friends pressure me to drink, I am always mindful of the potential consequences, knowing that one sip could lead to a relapse. I refuse to jeopardize my progress and steer clear of alcohol.โ So far, he hasnโt experienced any relapse since joining the center, and he is committed to maintaining sobriety.
Now, instead of succumbing to the temptation to drink, he firmly maintains his stance. โDespite my past mistakes, I feel as though I have been given a second chance at life. Reflecting on my past brings a sense of sadness, realizing that I must rebuild everything from scratch,โ he added. Occasionally, the thought of drinking resurfaces, but he reassures himself that he can handle it better this time around. He is confident that he can be a better father to his son, a more supportive son to his parents, and a positive influence on society. He aspires to blend in and lead a normal life like everyone else. Prioritizing his health and fitness has become essential for him as he believes itโs crucial for living a happy and fulfilling life.
Despite the challenges ahead, there is a deep-seated belief in the possibility of transformation. He is confident in his ability to be a beacon of light for his family, a source of strength for loved ones, and a positive influence on society. Vikramโs journey is the recognition of the importance of health and wellness. He understands that true happiness stems from a balanced and healthy profoundness to lead a life of normalcy, blending seamlessly into the fabric of society.
