A 17-year-old, class XII student of Bjishong Central School in Gasa jumped off to her death from a viewpoint cliff in Damji located some 400 meters away from Selekha village on Sunday afternoon.
The deceased was a day-scholar student living with her mother and step father in Selekha.
On 24th July; the day of tragedy, the deceased had a heated argument with her step father. The investigating police said,”The deceased’s mother said that it was the first time the family had such problem.”
Sources claimed that she ran away from home in tears after her step father slapped her during the heated argument.
The deceased’s cousin sister, a class VI student noticed her going towards the viewpoint. She followed the deceased but lost her track into the woods. The cousin claimed that she rushed back to their grandfather for assistance.
Police claimed that no one saw the deceased jumping off the viewpoint.
The family with the help of Bjishong’s teachers and local leaders looked for her. They found deceased’s slippers left behind on the edge of the viewpoint cliff.
Police said that it rained heavily on the day of incident, the route leading to the base of approximately100 meters high cliff was steep and slippery.
Teachers and local leaders could retrieve the deceased’s body around 9pm from the base of the cliff. The body was handed over to the family.
“The deceased succumbed to fallen injury, and by the time we reached the base of the cliff, she was no more,” said the investigating team.
The Dzongkhag Education Officer(DEO) stated that the grave incident occurred over the weekend because of broken family issue. “Had it been during school hours due to some school issues, we would have asked the school management to investigate the case thoroughly,” said the DEO.
Villagers claimed that the step father is an alcohol dependent person and the family usually have some problems.
“Usually children coming from broken family history are often mentally disturbed, and it’s sad,” said the police.
Police said that they are still investigating the case and trying to find out what made the deceased to take such grave action.
“We will take legal action against whoever found responsible that made the deceased take her own life,” said the investigating team.
The deceased’s body was cremated yesterday.
