Thimphu residents have witnessed a significant development as the old Simtokha highway, leading towards the Welcome Gate at Babesa, undergoes transformative resurfacing as part of a Thromde project. The road, previously marred by numerous potholes, had become a source of inconvenience for commuters in dire need of maintenance. Commencing in mid-June 2023, the project reached completion by mid-November of the same year.
According to a Thromde official, the allocated budget for the highway’s maintenance, road widening, drainage, and road marking amounted to approximately 30 million. Expressing relief and satisfaction, a regular commuter on the route shared, “It is a long-awaited issue, and now that it’s finally done, we are greatly relieved.” This sentiment resonates with many who have faced challenges navigating the deteriorating road conditions.
Pema, a taxi driver, highlighted the impact of the road’s condition on his vehicle, stating, “I inadvertently damaged the bumper of my taxi because I failed to notice the pothole, particularly at night.” Despite this, Pema expressed contentment with the proactive efforts undertaken by the Thromde to address the road’s maintenance needs. He further added, “I was pleased to have driven from Babesa to Changzantok without any issues.”
The positive response extends to recognition of individual responsibility in maintaining road safety. Tshering Cheki, a resident, pointed out, “Sometimes people tend to overlook the presence of potholes, especially when they are filled with water, resulting in damage to their cars.” Emphasizing the importance of personal accountability, particularly for those frequently traveling through construction areas, Cheki highlighted the need for collective efforts in addressing the issue.
“I used to dread my daily commute on this road, swerving to avoid potholes was a daily chore. Now, it’s like driving on a smooth carpet,” shared a relieved commuter, capturing the collective sentiment of those traversing the route.
For Sonam, a delivery truck driver, the road’s improvement means more than just a smoother ride. “The wear and tear on my vehicle were becoming a constant headache. Now, with the road fixed, I can focus on my deliveries without worrying about unnecessary maintenance costs,” he expressed.
The impact of the resurfacing extends beyond vehicular concerns. Karma, a local shop owner, expressed delight, saying, “Customers used to complain about the bumpy ride to my shop. Now, they arrive without the discomfort, and business is better.”
In addition to tangible benefits, the Thromde’s proactive approach to road maintenance has also garnered praise for its timing. A grateful commuter noted, “The Thromde stepped in at just the right time, taking advantage of the perfect season as the monsoon worsened the potholes.”
Individual stories reflect the broader satisfaction with the initiative. Leki, a resident in the vicinity, shared, “I feel a sense of pride knowing that our concerns were heard and addressed. It shows that our Thromde is invested in making our daily lives better.”
An official from Thromde stated, “We currently have additional projects in the planning phase, with others already in the implementation stage.”
As the community celebrates the completion of the Simtokha highway project, Thimphu Thromde stands applauded for not just fixing a road but for improving the overall quality of life for its residents. The resurfaced highway serves as a symbol of positive change and a testament to the Thromde’s commitment to enhancing the city’s infrastructure.
