Q. When did you begin your career in the film industry?
A. My journey in the film industry commenced around 2013 or 2014. Initially, I embarked on this path by taking on minor roles.
Q. Who supported you and provided the initial opportunity in your career?
A. Initially, I had no knowledge or interest in the film industry. It was my daughter who paved the way for my entry into this field. Additionally, director Talop Passang, a friend of my husband, played a crucial role in my journey. There was an instance when my daughter encountered him and inquired about his plans. He mentioned he was on the lookout for an actress to portray a mother characterized by her strictness and toughness. My daughter suggested me for the role, which marked the beginning of my acting career. Initially, stepping into this new world filled me with nervousness and anxiety. However, Director Passangโs supportive and encouraging demeanor greatly eased my transition. I am deeply appreciative of his faith in me and for offering me such a valuable opportunity.
Q. What were your initial thoughts or feelings upon facing the camera for the first time?
A. When asked about my initial impression before the camera, I recall trembling, utterly incapable of uttering a single word. The intensity of the moment had rendered me speechless. However, the director played a pivotal role in easing my nerves, encouraging me to relax and converse as if I were speaking with a family member. Despite the daunting start, I gradually became accustomed to the environment. Over time, what initially felt insurmountable became effortless and enjoyable.
Q. Among the numerous films in which you have performed, which one holds the title of your favorite, and could you share the reasons behind this preference?
A. Among the numerous films in which I have performed, selecting a favorite is no small task, as many of them hold a special place in my heart. In the majority of these films, I have portrayed the role of a mother, a character archetype that resonates deeply with me. However, if pressed to choose just one, โChoegyel Norzang and Yeethro Lhamoโ would stand out as my most cherished project. In this film, I had the honor of embodying the character of King Norzangโs mother, a role that not only challenged me as an actor but also allowed me to explore the depths of maternal love and strength. This experience was particularly meaningful, making โChoegyel Norzang & Yeethro Lhamoโ a film that I hold dear.
Q. Your given name is Choden, yet it seems everyone refers to you as โMummy Choden.โ Why is that?
A. I am affectionately known as โMummy Choden,โ a moniker that stems from the roles I frequently embody. In most of the films I participate in, I often portray the mother of the lead character. This recurring portrayal is likely the reason many refer to me as Mummy Choden.
Q. As an actor, what are the primary challenges you encounter in your profession, and what strategies do you employ to overcome these obstacles?
A. I faced no challenges, as the people around me were incredibly supportive. My husband and family have been exceptionally supportive as well. Whenever I have a shoot, all I need to do is inform him of what I require, and he takes care of arranging and packing the necessary items for me. Furthermore, he takes on the responsibility of looking after the children in my absence, ensuring that I can proceed with a relaxed mind.
Q. What were you doing before you pursued a career in acting?
A. Before, I devoted my time entirely to being a homemaker, as my husband served in the armed forces. However, due to health complications, he was compelled to resign prematurely. Consequently, we settled in Dangrina, Thimphu, where we purchased a modest plot of land to build our home. To support our family, I embarked on weaving and producing local ara (a traditional wine). My primary focus was on weaving, through which I earned a livelihood. Eventually, I ventured into the film industry.
Q. Given your extensive experience in the film industry, how do you perceive the evolution of cinema and the transformation in actorsโ performances over the years?
A. I perceive a significant evolution in both technology and the cinematic landscape. The realm of acting has seen an influx of exceptionally talented actors and actresses. By examining films from various countries, itโs evident that Bhutanโs movie industry is also undergoing transformative changes. I believe this shift signifies a progression towards improvement, enhancing the quality of cinema over time.
